Reading Response to A&P
The short story A&P is by John Updike. The main character is Sammy and he is a very weird person by sometimes very humorous. He can be humorous because he jokes with his friend that works with him and makes jokes about the customers that come in the store. Adding onto that, he is very judgemental because he disrespects the customers and makes fun of them. Sammy is also very observant because he describes exactly what the girls in their bathing suits look like when they walk into the store. When he sees the girls he was very misogynistic because he wonders if the girls have brains and he calls them animals.
One other trait that Sammy has is that he is very stubborn. He is stubborn because he followed through with quitting his job even though he was encouraged not to. I really liked the way the author gave Sammy's perspective but also it went a little too far. The book was set in an A&P grocery store in the 1960's. This time period was noticeable because of the prices of the products and the way people talked.
