Logan- Strengths and Challenges Fox- Writing as a freshman

Strengths and Challenges

In English 1 this years we have written many papers this year in a short amount of time. They are mostly rhetorical papers such as, a personal narrative, a literary analysis, and a research paper. I found my strength in my personal narrative because I wrote about a story that happened in my life that I remembered vividly. When I write papers I tend to write a lot more than required especially for the narrative. I was able to make the reader feel as if he or she was there with my diction and vivid detail in my paper. The challenge was the literary analysis because you had to find something to write about in the Lord of the Flies. I did not seek much help and that was my main problem. I went to the writing center but it was too late in my paper to actually make a difference in the grade. The grade was fine but I thought I could have made a better grade on it. Especially is this book there were so many references and foreshadowing that it was hard to comprehend without a teacher's a...

Hits and Misses

English this year was full of hits and misses but I found it enjoyable. We did multiple assignments such as personal narratives, literary analysis', write poems, and research papers. A hit this year was the process in reading Purple Hibiscus. I felt really good about the appetizers because I am very good at annotations. Also I felt I put a lot of effort into the entrée and also the dessert. Also the research paper was a hit but a little challenging. The pre-writing process was the easiest part but the actual writing of the paper was hard. A miss would be the literary analysis. There were so many things to write about in The Lord of the Flies. I probably should have gotten more help now that I think about it. Also the beginning of the poetry unit was a little challenging but I finished out strong on the test. The things that was challenging in the poetry unit were the terms because some of them were so similar it was so easy to mix them up.

Landry- Reading Response Jack- What was your most precious childhood possession?

What would your dream home be like?

My dream home would be on my private island in the Caribbean. It would have more than one pool; one on the outside and one on the inside. Also there would be two hot tubs in the same place as the pools. I would have my own airport so that I could fly my friends in if they did not have enough money. There would be parties every night and there would be unlimited food. It would have around 15 bedrooms, a game room, and indoor basketball court, an indoor soccer field, and an escalator. Also for the water they would be many fishing boats, jet skis, yachts, and many more water toys. Also you could hunt on the land because I would import animals onto the island so that they could reproduce and live in packs. The house would have a modern look to it and have lots of glass. The top floor would have a slide from the top into the pool. There would a huge yard to have an outdoor kitchen and to have a huge slipping slide down a hill. This is my dream house because it is a place where I would nev...

Purple Hibiscus Response

The novel Purple Hibiscus had changed tremendously since the last time I responded to it. Kambili and Jaja have gone to Aunt Ifeoma's house and it is very different from their home. The siblings meet many people in their family and get closer to them. Both of them feel comfortable after a few days especially Jaja. Kambili is very very shy and when she tries to talk she stutters and gets really nervous. Papa Nnukwa is very sick and has to stay with Aunt Ifeoma. He gets real sick and passes away in his sleep. Papa is very mad that his kids stayed with the heathen and did not tell him. Kambili and Jaja are punished and abused for their actions. This was very sad and hurting when I read this part of the book. Papa injured both of his kids very badly and mourns for it as he does it. Kambili has changed for the good because she can talk to people and have a conversation. Father Amadi helped her do that and now both of them have crushes on each other. This kind of crosses many boundari...

Naya-  Police Brutality: Stephen Clark autopsy Jack- Political Article Post

Political post

Author: Brian Schwartz The article I read was about the senate race in Florida between Rick Scott and Bill Nelson. This race is supposed to be the most expensive senate race ever. In this case money matters and both candidates have plenty of money because they are both receiving so many donations. The reason Scott has so many money is because he was apart of a group based in Southern Florida. This was a political action committee. They have already raised 1.7 million and he had a huge donation of $250,000 from a supportive group. Nelson could win because he has a bank of his own. His campaign had raised 10 million through the early months of 2018 and also have an extra 8 million on the side. A popular bank named Regions has given him $114,000. The downside was his background when he was a CEO of a healthcare company. He defrauded taxpayers and was asked to step down and leave the company. In the investigation they found nothing and did not charge him with anything. Title: Big m...

Logan- Free Post - Poem(Fortnite) Katie- Purple Hibiscus Response

PH Response

In the book Purple Hibiscus, the narrator is a fifteen year old girl named Kambili and she is living a complicated life in Enugu, Nigeria. There family is very wealthy but her father is very abusive, religious, and strict. I find it interesting that all of her actions revolve around her father. She has to get amazing grades and has no friends because he is so strict. She and her brother Jaja are a lesser level of a slave. A scene is when Papa beats their mom and they both clean the blood up immediately. I find it interesting that their whole church community finds him as "The Guy". Papa pays for the bakery that makes the communion bread, the cartons of wine, and for the new wing at St Agnes Hospital. He is seen as the good samaritan and the one who does amazing things for the community. Also it is interesting that the amount of praying and worship the family does is a lot. Almost always they pray for twenty minutes before their lunch.

This is a story about overcoming adversity. I play for a soccer club that requires a lot of dedication. My teammates are from many different schools and I get to hang out with them at tournaments and also at our practices. We had a tournament last year was in Foley, Alabama and we were playing teams from Louisiana, Florida, and Alabama. We had an easy first game against Gonzales and played an awful team the second time and played poorly and tied. The next game was against Lafayette and we won that game. We were going to the finals in the tournament because we had the best record and more points. We were playing Gonzales but it was going to be hard. We had out entire defense and our forward that were going to be out because of a mandatory dinner for Catholic High in order to officially go there. It was going to take a lot of sweat to win the game. They had fresh legs and a full roster and we had one sub. We had a hard fought ten minutes and we scored in the twelfth minute. We were def...

Jack - Custom Poem Logan- Poem: Mountain Farmer

Umbrella

I chose this song because I could not find one and it was on the list of songs that was provided. The artists are very popular because they are talented. This song uses internal rhyme, alliteration, and assonance. "You know me, in anticipation for precipitation" This is the internal rhyme part of the song. Rihanna rhymes is some of her lines because it gets her message in a different way and it is creative. This keeps the listeners like myself, hooked into the song and maybe buy it or spread the word that it was a good song. She writes her lyrics most of the time in a effective way which helps her make millions. "Under my umbrella (Ella ella, eh eh eh)" This part of the song is assonance. This part is very catchy and I think it goes well with the song. This gets the point across because it is said over and over again. The umbrella I think means being under her protection or she has someone's back. "Good Girl Gone Bad" This is alliteration ...

Summer Poem

School is out for good relaxing can now begin stress food becomes soul food Rain storms come and go while good times are here to stay And the salty water goes flow flow flow The time flies by while the sun shines for long hours at a time the ice cream truck is just around the corner the best truck on earth Summer is the best season of all seasons but only because of these reasons I used end rhyme, euphony, and Sibilance

The LSU basketball team has had a very challenging season this year along with many others. This year LSU got an amazing coach named Will Wade. The Tigers are in the SEC conference and the conference has been bad for many years now except for the Kentucky Wildcats. This year we get a new coach and a pretty decent team and all of the sudden there are many SEC teams that are final four contenders. This is pretty annoying because we will have to play in the NIT tournament. The team this year is the most inconsistent team I have ever watched. We have two players, one being our freshman point guard and the other being the senior power forward. We have some amazing recruits coming in for next year's team because they want to play for Will Wade. I am a big LSU basketball fan because we find a way to compete with Kentucky even with average players and are making a comeback.

Launch day

The presentation that I liked was the one by Jack Melton on Resilience in the major hurricanes in the past ten years or so. The first one was on Hurricane Katrina that hit the great city of New Orleans. There were many people stranded on their roofs, attics and even floating cars. There were not that many rescue missions. Most were good citizens with boats and the national guard. My grandparents lived on Lake Pontchartrain and their house was blown into the lake. I was two at the time and did not remember that much but it is devastating. The next hurricane in 2017 was Hurricane Harvey that hit the lower part of Texas. Many rescuers were ready such as the Cajun Army out of Louisiana. They have hundreds of members with boats and comfort people when they were rescued. There were only 82 people that died. In Hurricane Katrina there were 1,833 people that died. Rescue missions are becoming stronger and more efficient as the years move on. This was a very interesting presentation to me.

Jack- Research Update Emma P- ATDPTI

ATDPTI

This book is not one of my favorites but keeps me occupied when I am reading it. The main characters are total opposites and cannot be separated. Junior is a character is does not have an off button. He is a little immature I guess. His friend Rowdy is totally different but they are best friends. I want to read a little bit more because the Reservation is confusing to me. Some people pretty much have a good life there and then there are some people who do not like it. The author goes into depth on how people live on the Reservation. This makes interesting and pretty cool.

Research Post

My project is on the Chernobyl nuclear explosion. My research question is how did the explosion affect the region and the surrounding areas? It is a very interesting topic because it is the worst nuclear disaster to ever happen in the world. There are many sub categories that could go with this topic. Mine are the levels of radiation, the Decline of the Soviet Union, and a decline in birth rate and population. The radiation is very bad to this day because of how far the dangerous materials and gases went into the air. No family wants to raise a family there because of the radiation. Many babies were born with birth defects because of the dangerous gases. The Union did not let people know that there was a disaster until three days after. It is a very sad topic but very interesting.
